The death of a Nigeria rapper “Dagrin” better known as Olaitan Olaonipekun by close family members has placed his family and friends in depression mood as a result of this early exit to the grave.
Dagrin who was born in the year 1984, to the family of comrade Olaniyi Olanipekun. Polygamous family where Dagrin’s mother is a second wife of the family, Dagrin was 4th in number in the family of the nine children, and being the only male child in the family and the first born of his mother.
The late rapper started struggling for his survival early life, by engaging in various means of hustling in order to make a living and surviving. After several attempting of writing Jamb four times, without any admission, Dagrin registered himself in one private computer institute where he obtained diploma in computer engineering. He later moved up to popular computer village in Ikeja area of Lagos, where he was dealing in sales of phones and computer accessories.
It was through this means Dagrin was able to save enough money to pursue his musical career. Dagrin knew he was a raw talents and he could make it through music this was more reason he laid much emphasizes on music after several attempts of self-sustenance. Dagrin first Album titled “still on the matter” gave him no recognition due to the poor promotion of the album but it makes Dagrin hopes for better adjustment of his music career. He released another Album which hit the air-waves and become national anthem to all. This album titled C.E.O where Dagrin described himself as the over all president of “Area Boys”. This album brought this energetic late Nigerian rapper into limelight and made him eminent personality in Nigeria entertainments as no musical show in complete without the performance of Dagrin”.
As he was entertaining his fans, adding value to the Nigeria music and lighting up shows, both home and aboard, Dagrin was suddenly taken away by a mysterious death which thrown everybody in cold weather of music because people are amazed at course of this great icon’s death.
Dagrin hit the scene shortly, but he achieved a lots he rised from the bottom to the level of undisputed, sang the best of sows, rose to become an international rap icon who easily drew crowd to live concert.
Two weeks before Dagrin’s sudden death, he involved in an auto accident with newly bought car, along Mushin Alakara, where he ran into a stationery truck stopped by policemen for a check. He was immediately rushed to Tai Solarin hospital in Mushin and later transferred to Lagos teaching hospital (Luth) for proper medical attention.
In Luth, Dagrin was given best medical attention to revival him. He underwent medical surgeries and was responding to treatments in attendance of medical experts which was an indication proper medication. After battling with severe injuries sustained through the accident, the enigma of Nigerian rapper gave up the ghost.
According to the doctor, the late energetic and versatile rapper had cardiac Arrest, 9 times and each time, he was revived. He was later place on a life supporting machine which could not prevented the cardiac arrest. Dagrin’s death has been collectively accepted as mysterious one because he had always involved in strange things which were indications of mystery behind Dagrin’s death. In his highly rated album C.E.O among his lyrics is “mo ti fo ori mi pelu kankan, mo ti so sodo, oti bodo lo” which literally meaning I have washed my head with spiritual sponge, I have thrown it into the river, and it has flown away with river. Another one is “Eni wa miti e o ni ri ogun ibo logbalo“. Meaning I shall never lost and nobody shall search for me. In another music where he was featured with his fellow artiste YQ, he said “woni mi o ni pelu timi O badeku, kilotuku“. Meaning they said with life I am living, I will die young, and If God do not kill me who else. These are few utterances Dagrin uttered in his short living on earth.
Dagrin recorded another mysterious track early February which was titled “If I die” this music raised alarm on Dagrin’s mysterious death. Many said Dagrin knew he was going to die soon.
But Tunde one of the Dagrin’s close friends, comment that, I cannot say his death is mysterious, but it just an unfortunate thing: based on that song “If I die”, and the lyrics of the song, some people said is mysterious but I don’t know what thy mean.
As many people are busy mourning the exit of this Youngman, some rumour mongers keep posting on the internet that he was drunk but his manager debunked it all, Dagrin didn’t even have a sip of alcohol on that day.
The 26years indigenous rap artiste died 14th, April 2010 and he was buried on 30th, April 2010 at a private cementary called Ebony private vault, Atan in Yaba Lagos.
Tears were the show of contest as many families, colleagues, friends and show promoters demonstrated feelings andas they paid last respect to the great icon. Different personalities style of crying, such personalities includes, Kenny Ogungbe Dayo Adeneye, DJ Zeez, Lexydo, siant Brown, Cabasa and other close friends.
Many of his close friends agreed that they will all miss him for his talents and his genre of music. Several comments have arised since his death. Some people blamed the negligence of his parents for their inability to give Dagrin the necessary spiritual assistance to assist him in his career. Another source disclosed it that who knowns Dagrin might had engaged in fame rituals to enhance his popularity because his early exit surprise me many people. On a final notes. May Almighty God forgive Dagrin for all his shortcoming and grant him paradise.
